THE ART OF IMPROVISATION

Quite a few painters have been inspired by jazz, perhaps feeling an affinity with the music’s rhythmic complexity –

but few can have had a closer relationship than Gina Southgate, who worked as ‘artist-in-residence’ at Jazz North East’s ‘On the Outside’ Festival from 9th – 11th October, and whose spontaneous images will be on show at Newcastle Arts Centre from October 24 (when the band Speeq will also perform).

London-based Gina sets up her canvas close to the musicians during jazz gigs, and paints them during the actual performance; and when the music stops, so does she, leaving the painting exactly as it is, without any subsequent re-working or ‘tidying up’.

She thus maintains the same spontaneity that drives the music itself, especially the totally free improvisation which is her preferred inspiration. “In live jazz, the musicians can’t go back and change what they’ve played, and I want my paintings

to convey that same real time uniqueness.”

As ‘On the Outside’ brought together many of the world’s finest free jazz players, Gina jumped at the chance to be a part of it. She worked throughout the three days of the Festival, in full view of the audience, who were able to watch her paintings as they developed . Festival organizer Paul Bream believes this adds a great new dimension:

“Gina’s ability to capture the creative vitality of the music is truly remarkable, and to see her at work is a fantastic bonus. It makes what was already a hugely exciting Festival even more of a treat”.

Gina had her first exhibition of music imagery at London's Jazz Cafe in 1988, since when she has continually worked with live music, mainly on the improvised music scene where the frisson of the music marries closely with her gestural approach to mark making.

The paintings in this exhibition were created in real time at Gateshead Old Town Hall during the three days of Jazz North East's 'On the Outside' Festival.

The paintings which Gina creates during the Festival will be exhibited, and available for purchase, at Newcastle Arts Centre,

with a preview on 24th October, and continuing on show until 14th November.

AN EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY

MIKE CLAY

The works in this exhibition date from May 2008 and are part of a recent, continuous series of paintings. So far, the series numbers some 150 paintings this show is a selection of the 'finished' pieces.

The narratives in Mike's paintings stem from personal observation, stories recounted by friends or gleaned from overheard conversations. In what others might dismiss as mundane, Mike discovers and depicts dramas which although familier are often dark, tender or bizzarre.

The image chosen for the poster titled, 'The Battle of Tel-El-Kebir' set in the back lane of a Sunderland street Tel-El-Kebir, the angry confrontation where hurled stilettos are the weapon of choice.

Most images are from within a five kilometre radius of Mikes home in Hendon, Sunderland. Sources include drawings from life, written notes, photographs and local press cuttings.

Painting and Limited Edition Prints are for Sale.

PRESS RELEASE

Tyneside: Never Remembered’ EXHIBITION AT NEWCASTLE ARTS CENTRE

Artwork by mental health service users from St Nicholas Hospital will be on display at Newcastle Arts Centre this summer. The exhibition, the ninth organised by Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust’s Arts Service, features work by studio users from the hospital’s Art Room. It highlights the history of Tyneside and the changes that have taken place over the years.

The show ‘Tyneside: Never Remembered’ runs from Saturday 28th June – 19th July 2008.

Opening times are 9:00am - 5:30pm, Monday – Friday, Saturday 9:00am – 5:00pm;

admission is free.

Photographers and other members of the press are invited to attend a special preview and meet the artists on Friday 27th June from 2 pm - 3:30pm at Newcastle Arts Centre.

Studio Co-ordinators Lisa Corken and Kevin Meikle said: “ For the ninth annual Art Room exhibition, studio users were inspired by a trip to view and document the defunct cranes at the former Swan Hunters Shipyard, Wallsend,

“They photographed and sketched these well-known landmarks and this led to discussions on how Newcastle and the wider Tyneside area has changed throughout time, especially over the last few years.

“Individuals expressed a desire to explore these ideas and associated imagery for the overall theme of the exhibition. This enabled service users to produce a diverse range of work using a variety of medium and allowed people to investigate areas of Tyneside’s history of personal interest. ”

“The Art Room staff and users would like to thank Newcastle Arts Centre for offering them exhibition space and the NTW Trust for their continued support.”

The creative therapy offered by the Art Room offers, people recovering from mental illness and disorders, the chance to practise art outside of a clinical remit. Many people then progress onto education courses or to fulfil ambitions in other areas.

As part of the Europa Nostra events in Newcastle in June, Newcastle Arts Centre presents

this exhibition of the historic Bridge over the River Vistula at Tczew/Poland (formerly Dirschau, West Prussia).

No similar bridge of such proportions remains from the mid 19th century. The bridge was an important model for similar bridges, like Robert Stephenson’s High Level Bridge in Gateshead/Newcastle (completed 1849) the bridge at Tczew/Dirschau now constitutes a major technical engineering monument of outstanding European and World importance.

This photo documentary show with texts in English, German and Polish will be opened on Friday 6th June 2008 at 6 p.m, visitors are welcome.

Also at Newcastle Arts Centre on Wednesday 11th June 2008 at 11 a.m. admission Free. Professor Dr. Wieland Ramm
(Technical University, Kaiserslautern/Germany) will talk (in English) on the construction and history of the bridge.

This exhibition and talk take place as part of the events of Europa Nostra, the largest NGO pan-European federation of associations and enthusiasts, for the preservation of historic buildings and landscapes,
in the Newcastle area from 11th – 15th June 2008.

Interestingly the Europa Nostra Forum on “The Engineering Heritage” on Friday 13th June, as part of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2009, is the 150th anniversary of the death of Robert Stephenson (1803 - 1859).

The exhibition together with an accompanying book (in German and Polish) was conceived and prepared by Prof. Ramm with the help of other German and Polish experts, in particular from the Technical University in Gdansk(Danzig)/Poland. It has been shown in Poland, Germany, Switzerland and Spain. The exhibition and talk in Newcastle have been made possible in particular by Prof. Ramm himself, with help and support from Europa Nostra, Newcastle Arts Centre, Angus Fowler and Magda Prosinska and especially by a grant from the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation (Fundacje Wspolpracy Polsko-Niemeckiej)/Warsaw/Poland.

Caroline Coode

IMPRESSIONS AND RECOLLECTIONS

A retrospective exhibition of prints and watercolours

Newcastle Arts Centre April 25 - May 31 2008

OPEN 9-5 MONDAY TO SATURDAY

Open Evening THURSDAY 24TH APRIL 6-8PM

followed by LIVE JAZZ in the Black Swan

This solo exhibition by Caroline Coode is a way of marking her 70th year.

The work reflects her constant themes of landscapes, natural forms, water and light.

There are limited edition prints made in a variety of techniques, collages and watercolours.

Turning 70 is proving an important marker for her: "I am finding it fascinating looking back at the work I have made over the past 25 years reflecting, as it does, the progress of my artistic life. I see it with fresh eyes and feel quite affectionate towards it, remembering the circumstances in which it was conceived and the ensuing toils of its making"

While caring for her family and bringing up five sons Coode maintained her childhood love of painting and drawing. In 1988, at the age of 50, she graduated from Sir John Cass College in Whitechapel, London.

She set up adult education classes in London, which ran for six years, and after her move to Newcastle, taught at Newcastle College, Higham Hall, Cumbria and Northern Print.

Between 1993 and 2003 Coode led eight painting treks to Nepal. The culmination of these visitswas a touring exchange exhibition with Nepalese artists, which she curated in 2000-2002. Venues included Newcastle, Taunton, Letchworth, Antrim, Edinburgh and Nepal.

For six years she chaired The Friends of the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle, running printmaking workshops as part of the events programme. Coode has had several solo shows; exhibited regularly with The Printmakers Council, The National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Printmakers; was commissioned by P&O to produce two works for their new liner ‘Oriana’ and has work in a number of public collections.

Now based in the North East, Coode is concentrating on exhibiting in the area, and is delighted to be having this 25 year retrospective in the gallery at Newcastle Arts Centre.

Many works will be for sale from £50 with 10% of sales going to cancer research.

February 2006
Angel Traces - a new exhibition

Angels was an artist led project as part of the government funded SURE START scheme involving
parents and small children in the making of these life size works of vibrant colour.
Children, parents and staff from Sure Start, Leam Lane Children's Centre in Gateshead,
have worked together with Newcastle based artist Helen Averley to produce a collection of 'Angel Traces'
currently on display at Newcastle Art Centre's gallery on Westgate Road.

This body of life size mixed media pieces, was produced by sixteen 2-5 year olds, working alongside mum,
dad, grandad or sibling to produce a beautiful selection of images. Despite their abstract nature,
the images do seem to show the character and nature of each child, and shed a whole new light on
young children's self portraiture.

This is not the first art project that has been undertaken at Sure Start Leam Lane Children's Centre,
but it has perhaps been the most ambitious venture, and has shown an ability to concentrate and create
in these very young children, that is outstanding considering their tender years.
The larger pieces are the work of those parents and carers who opted to create their own angel.

The Process

Each child took a life size piece of tracing paper and was given a choice of inks to produce a colour-washed background.
The paper was then taped to a large sheet of transparent plastic, and held up vertically.
A stage light was then shone through the translucent surface, whilst each child was encouraged to ‘strike a pose’
against the opposite side to create a shadow. Their partner then made the most of the brief time the child was still,
to trace an impression of them using acrylics, ink, PVA and glitter. Once the image was removed from the plastic,
the figure was solidified as much or as little as desired.
The children then chose which particular variety of ‘wings’ they thought they should have.
With help from artist Helen, the group experimented with techniques to add various glitters to complete these spendid angels.

Exhibition of Seascapes by Jason Skill
20 July - 27 August 2005 Mon - Sat 9-5

This exhibition was specially commissioned by Newcastle Arts Centre to coincide with the visit of the Tall Ships to Newcastle.
We provided Jason with a studio space and a 10 metre length of watercolour paper to produce some outstanding
large scale watercolours that are central to this exhibition.

Jason lives at Ryton on Tyne and has a growing reputation as a seascape artist capable of pushing the medium
of watercolour beyond the conventional norm of scale and brushwork. To produce work like this requires speed
and confidence that comes from years of practice combined with talent and enthusiasm all of which all
well demonstrated in this show.

Metro Life 4 star rating
' Attacking the paper with the ferocity of a rabid beast , the North East based artist captures the power of the sea.
- its actually something of a relief that these large scale pieces are contained within robust looking silver frames -
even Ellen MacArthur would think twice about getting back into a boat if she saw these.'

Each a Glimpse and Gone......

AN EXHIBITION OF RAILWAY PHOTOGRAPHY

BY COLIN GIFFORD

Author of; Decline of Steam, each a glimpse..., ...and gone for ever,

on the 40th anniversary of the publication of the Decline of Steam.

Colin Gifford is considered by many as the father of progressive railway photography and was paid
the ultimate accolade when five of his railway photographs appeared on Royal Mail stamps issued in January 1994.

Railways have always fascinated him, especially their relationship with landscape, topography and the people
who work and use them. This approach was evident in his first book, Decline of Steam, published in 1965,
which even today is regarded as one of the most influential railway photographic titles. Depicting steam on
British Railways in the 1960’s each a glimpse... was published in 1970 and received much critical acclaim.
This was followed in 1994 by ...and gone for ever its long-awaited companion. These superbly atmospheric

photographs are, in addition to being evocative studies of the railway scene during the last years of steam,
a unique record of the urban and rural landscape of Great Britain in the 50’s and 60’s.

Following five years fine art training at Harrow School of Art, Colin Gifford spent some time in advertising
before working for transport publishers. He is now a freelance photographer and author living in Hatfield,
Hertfordshire and is still active photographing topographical, industrial and
both the preserved and modern railway scenes.

Friday 16th September - Saturday 15th October 2005. open 9am 5pm Mon-Sat.

Gateshead’s Iron Horse

a DISPLAY CELEBRATING THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF

THE WORLD’S FIRST RAILWAY LOCOMOTIVE

The World’s first Railway Locomotive ran at Gateshead during the summer of 1805.

The Bicentenary of an event that would change the world has gone almost unnoticed until now.

In 1804 Christopher Blackett ordered a locomotive to be built at Gateshead to the design of the
Cornish engineer Richard Trevithick, 25 years before Stephenson’s ‘Rocket’. It was the first Locomotive
built with flanged wheels designed to run on a railway. This first railway engine was completed in May 1805
and demonstrated during the summer 200 years ago. It was built by John Steele the engineer at
John Winfield’s Iron and Brass Foundry in Pipewellgate a hundred yards from where Robert Stephenson’s
High Level Bridge now stands.
“It weighed four tons and a half, and was designed to travel on wooden rails hauling a load of ten tons
and a half at a rate of four miles an hour.” This was Trevithick’s second design for what he called a “Tram Wagon”
and John Steele called an “Iron Horse” and was the first true Railway Engine because all previous travelling
engines had plain road wheels.

“Arguably the world’s first purpose designed railway locomotive” Andy Guy 5/8/2005 author of ‘Steam and Speed’
