Experimental Drawing

Unusual approaches to drawing:
What happens if we use unusual drawing implements, look from unusual viewpoints and juxtapose unusual objects in unusual contexts?
This course is focussed on experiments and play, encouraging you to find out ‘what happens when...?’
rather than aiming for specific outcomes.

Life Drawing

this course provides an in-depth introduction
to a selection of Life Drawing practices
with Narbi Price. Working from an unclothed model, each class will explore a different aspect of the Life Drawing process and develop each student’s skill in drawing and looking.

Soft Pastels

The aim of this course is to develop confidence and competencies in pastel, and a broad understanding of the medium and possibilities.

We will examine a number of pictures, including historical works and our own personal images.

The course will cover colour, underpainting, use of light, tone and combining techniques learned through these exercises to create sketches and completed works.

Chinese Brush Painting - Landscapes

Dr Chun-Chao Chiu has taught Chinese brush painting for over 16 years and for this one day course he will help you develop a basic understanding of the techniques used in traditional Chinese landscape painting, and the materials involved.

Sketch in the City

Working both in the studio at Newcastle Arts

Centre and on location in various places around

Newcastle, you will explore ways in which you can record your experiences of the city. You will learn how you can make the most of sketching on location, play with a variety of techniques and approaches and consider how to develop your work once back in the studio. Be prepared for working both inside and outside. For the first session meet at Newcastle Arts Centre. You will then be given the details of where you will be drawing each week.  Suitable for all levels of drawing experience.

 Introduction to Acrylic Painting

Narbi Price will lead an in-depth introduction to painting with Acrylics; covering materials, surface preparation, painting techniques & mediums, colour theory & composition. Watercolour Painting

Drawing for the Terrified
Crash Course

A crash course for anyone who has always wanted to be able to draw: you’ll discover that you can! We’ll look at ways in which you can tap into the drawing side of your brain and then develop a few techniques to get you drawing from observation.  Suitable for absolute beginners or those who have not drawn for a long time.

 Urban Landscapes
Tutor: Jenny Purrett

1 x 6 hour session

Saturday 15th August

10am – 4pm

Course fee £45

Structures, perspective, texture and light are all key components of the urban landscape. Using photographic imagery we will look at a variety of ways to make dramatic, atmospheric drawings using charcoal, ink, paint and collage. The focus is on fun and experimentation. Images to work from will be provided, although if you want to works from specific images, then do bring them along. 

Suitable for all levels of drawing experience.

Painting 101 – How paintings work  
Tutor: Narbie Price

1 x 5 hour session

Saturday 12th September

11am – 4pm

Course fee - £35

 Part-lecture, part-workshop, part-surgery, join technical expert and self-confessed ‘paint geek’ Narbi Price for this one day event exploring all of the main painting media and have a go at making your own artists quality oil paint.

Fundamental to producing successful paintings is a good working knowledge of the materials used - this session will look at making paintings from the ground up and address common problems and pitfalls.

Covering making paint, preparing surfaces, brushes,  mediums, the paint itself and importantly, the ‘rules’ of good painting practice and how to break them!

There will also be plenty of opportunities to ask whatever technical questions you like, however unusual
