£5.00 (£4.00 advance from the Jazz Cafe 0191 222 9882)

rarely in this trio with unquestionably the region’s best piano/double bass partnership :
Paul Edis and Andy Champion. Together they will be exploring repertoire drawn from some of Noel’s
main musical influences including Miles Davis, Tom Harrell, Woody Shaw and Bill Evans.Noel works
professionally as a soloist and has worked alongside the likes of Andy Sheppard, Tommy Smith
and John Surman. Noel leads his own quartet and also writes and records incidental music for TV,
working closely with renowned composer/producer Bob Bradley.

gypsy swing duo. Expect a mixture of gypsy standards, Django Reinhardt tunes and originals.

Thursday 26th May 8.00 pm (Doors 7.30pm) – The Jazz Cafe & Jazz North East jointly present
The Ingrid Jensen Quartet. Canadian trumpeter Ingrid Jensen's big breakthrough came

in Europe where, after a tour with the Vienna Arts Orchestra, she became the youngest ever
professor at Austria's Bruckner Conservatory. Since then she has become a truly international star,
with an intrepid, propulsive - and often mighty funky - approach that contains hints of Miles Davis,
Art Farmer and Woody Shaw, but absorbed into a sound that is all her own.

She comes to the Black Swan Bar & Venue, Newcastle Arts Centre for the first gig in a tour
set up by NorVol, the network of Northern jazz promoters, and linking her with guitarist Jez Franks,
drummer Tim Giles, and Tyneside's very own Andy Champion on bass.
The group will be playing material specially created by Ingrid for the project, following a couple of days
development and rehearsal right here at the Jazz Café.
So, a great gig, by a great quartet - and a world premiere into the bargain!

Saturday 28th May 9.00pm – Alice Grace / Peter Gilligan Duo – Admission Free

Exploring melodies and playful improvisation, vocalist Alice with pianist Peter will be performing
a mix of sentimental and contemporary songs. Expect Abbey Lincoln, Charlie Parker and some
lesser known innovators to be present.

Tuesday 31st May 8.15pm (Doors 8.00pm) – Jazz North East presents Schmazz with
The Olie Brice Quintet

Bassist Olie Brice has been a regular visitor to Jazz North East in recent years, in contexts
as diverse as Loz Speyer's Inner Space Music and an improv duo with German pianist
Achim Kaufmann, but this will be the first time he's been here as leader of his own group.

And what a group it is. On mainly original tunes which combine Olie's love for melody with
plenty of space for free-ranging improvisation (and the occasional unexpected standard -
'If You Were the Only Girl in the World' often finds a place in their sets), the three horn
front line of Alex Bonney on trumpet, George Crowley on tenor sax, and Mike Fletcher
on the rarely heard C-Melody sax provide a subtle blend of gently textured harmonies
and open but measured intensity.
With Olie's own compelling bass playing (Charles Mingus and Charlie Haden are the
masters who most readily come to mind), and the impeccable drumming of former Stan Getz
sidesman Jeff Williams, this is a band that brilliantly balances the straightahead and the free,
and should enthrall fans of both approaches. Admission £10.00 & £8.00 concessions
available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246)
or online from

Gerry Richardson’s Big Idea - £6.00 (£4.00 Under 18s with an adult) at the door

What makes a Big Idea show special is not just its eclectic mix of Funk, Latin, African and
straight-ahead Swing but also its cast of leading Northern players.
Lyrical altoist Garry Linsley lines up alongside acclaimed saxophonists Sue Ferris and
Stuart Johnson, while the brass section of Gordon Marshall, Dave Hignett and David Gray
pack a punch worthy of Muhammed Ali. Guitarist Rod Sinclair is a virtuoso at home in
everything from classic jazz to R'n'B, while the whole ensemble is driven relentlessly forward
by the leader's dynamic work on the Hammond Organ and Adam Sinclair at the drums..

Friday 3rd June 9.00pm (Doors 8.30pm) –
JV Quartet. £5.00 (£4.00 advance from the Cafe 0191 222 9882)
Led by Slovakian drummer Jakub Valicek, the JV Quartet consists of four strong musical
personalities, all graduates from Birmingham Conservatoire and important elements in that
city’s vibrant jazz and improvised music scene. The musicians are Stuart Barker double bass
(leader of his own quartet ULV), Andrew Woodhead piano & composer (also a bandleader
and curator of the city’s free improv “Fizzle” sessions) and Tom Niblock saxophone.

The band’s music is influenced by bebop and post-bop jazz and by composer -musicians
including Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis John Coltrane and Chick Corea.

Zilina Festival where they supported Snarky Puppy.

Saturday 4th June 9.00pm –
Debra Milne / Bradley Johnston Duo

Free Rising star guitarist Bradley & jazz vocalist Debra have been working together since late 2015,
and their rapidly developing musical empathy will be evident, as the duo explores an
eclectic selection of jazz standards, along with some of their original songs.

Tuesday 7th June 8.00pm – Tuesday Jam – Free Admission -
Messrs Gilligan (piano) , Grainger (double bass) & Morgan (kit drums),
Purveyors of Fine Jams, invite musicians and vocalists to join their House Ensemble
in improvisational explorations for the delight of their discerning audience.
So good you’ll think it’s a gig.

Friday 10th June 9.00pm (Doors 8.30pm) –
Mark Toomey / Lewis Watson Quintet £6.00 (£5.00 advance from The Cafe
Many regard Lewis Watson as far- and- away the finest tenor player ever to emerge
in the region, as he demonstrated in his work with John Warren’s Voice of the North Orchestra,
with many of the late Keith Morris’s projects, in the sadly short-lived Indo-Jazz quartet,
Free Spirits, and in a succession of his own trios and quartets.

Lewis almost never plays publicly on Tyneside nowadays so this outing with bebop
specialist Mark Toomey’s band must surely sell out. You are advised to book!

Mark Toomey (alto sax); Lewis Watson (tenor sax); Jeremy McMurray (piano);
Peter Ayton (bass) ; Paul Smith (drums)

Saturday 11th June 9.00pm – Don Forbes / Peter Gilligan Duo - Free

Don and Peter team up again to present a trumpet and piano duo take on unusual
standards and some post bop jazz. Music from Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan and
Dexter Gordon features along with some original tunes from Don.

Tuesday 14th June 8.00pm (Doors 7.30pm) –
Dominic J. Marshall Trio £7.00 (£5.00 advance from The Cafe 0191 222 9882).

Pianist and composer Dominic Marshall released his third CD “Spirit Speech” in
Spring 2014, two years after he graduated from Amsterdam Conservatoire and based
on its success, was selected to play at that year’s Dutch Jazz Competition. He was
named “Best Soloist” and in November was nominated for an Edison International
Jazz Award alongside international US star Brad Mehldau.

Marshall’s style of jazz has elements within it of classical and even folk music but draws
strongly from the more contemporary realms of hip hop and electronic. With a move to Holland
he established separate Dutch and UK trios and in December 2013 Lance of Bebop
Spoken Here reviewed the British trio with the two dynamic Sams – Gardner and Vicary,
drums and double bass - and wrote that “ Marshall is quite an astonishing pianist with a
technique comparable with a lot of better known names.” The UK Trio comes to the
Jazz Cafe promoting the new CD “The Triolithic.”

In 2015 the jazz world caught up with Lance when the two trios respectively played critically
acclaimed shows at the North Sea Jazz Festival (broadcast on network Dutch TV),
at the Bimhuis, Amsterdam, at the Brighton Festival and at the South Bank Centre,
the Pizza Express Jazz Club and the Vortex, all three in London.

Thursday 16th June 8.00pm –
DESCARGA! Havana Style Cuban Jam Session –Free Admission –
Members of Havana Club 5, Tyneside’s specialists in the rhythms of latin America,
invite you to play, listen or dance. Bring your instruments and sit in on a selection of
the best afro cuban jazz, son, merengue, cha cha cha and guaracha..

Friday 17th June 9.00pm (Doors 8.30pm) – In / Out Trio
£5.00 (£4.00 advance from The Cafe 0191 222 9882)
Anyone who saw the celebration of Horace Silver’s music at The Cafe in February
(7 Pieces of Silver) and The Blind Monk Trio last November will have seen the three
excellent North West musicians making up the In/Out Trio: Stuart MacDonald, baritone
and alto saxes from the former, and well known at clubs up and down the country for
his fiery improv and rich tone; Paul Baxter, double bass and leader of 7 Pieces of Silver;
and Johnny Hunter, drums, from Blind Monk Trio. All three are first call musicians
on the Manchester scene and Johnny and Paul
are the “engine room” for the Manchester Jazz Collective.

As the In/Out Trio they work acoustically exploring standards and contemporary classics
in a highly intuitive, fluid and interactive style.

Saturday 18th June 9.00pm – Ray Dales / James Harrison Duo – Free Admission

“Ray Dales is just such a beautiful alto player – Benny Carter and Charlie Parker live
beneath his fingers” wrote Lance of Bebop Spoken Here and that’s a view of his fellow
Teessider very much shared by pianist James Harrison whose first ever jazz gig,
aged 15, was with the legend known to his friends as “Dalesy.”

Expect a variety of standards in Ray’s bebop style plus some of both men’s cool arrangements.
Oh and James reckons to knock fifty years off Ray when they play together.

Tuesday 21st June 8.00pm – Tuesday Jam – Free Admission -
Messrs Gilligan (piano) , Grainger (double bass) & Morgan (kit drums), Purveyors of Fine Jams,
invite musicians and vocalists to join their House Ensemble in improvisational explorations
for the delight of their discerning audience. So good you’ll think it’s a gig.

Friday 24th June 9.00pm (Doors 8.30pm) – Sue Richardson ‘ Too Cool.’

Tickets £10 / £8 conc. from The Jazz Cafe (0191 222 9882); Reflex CD (0191 260 3246);
or online from seetickets.com

The story of Chesney 'Chet' Baker, American trumpeter and vocalist, is a kind of reverse
of the Dorian Grey tale. From angel-faced boy wonder in the 1950s, Baker aged hideously
thanks to a life-long heroin habit, yet he still somehow managed to conjure up some sublime
performances right through to the end.

For this joint Jazz Cafe / Jazz North East / 'Women Makes Music' gig, Sue Richardson
- trumpet, flugelhorn and vocals - works with a hand- picked North East group to recreate
Baker's music, adding some original tunes of her own, and stringing the whole thing together
with a spoken narrative developed with the help of actress Sylvia Sims.
Since its first performance in 2013
(commemorating the 25th anniversary of Baker's mysterious death) this project and its
associated CD has been drawing rave reviews, and has several times sold out Ronnie Scott's
London club. It seems likely to pack out the Jazz Café as well, so our advice is, book early.

Sue Richardson (Trumpet/Flugelhorn/Vocals/Narration); Sue Ferris (Baritone Sax);
Paul Edis (Pno); Andy Champion (Double bass); Russ Morgan (Drums)

Saturday 25th June 9.00pm – Pete Tanton / John Pope Duo – Free

John (double bass) and Pete (trumpet and flugelhorn) will be taking the 60s vibe of
The Riviera Quartet (Jazz Cafe 26th February), paring it down even further -
apres beach in San Tropez - and throwing some latin standards and ballads into the mix.
There might even be a vocal or two. Zut alors!

Tuesday 28th June 8.15pm (Doors 8.00pm)
Jazz North East presents Schmazz with Tim Richards’ Hextet
Black Swan Bar & Venue, 69 Westgate Road, NE1 1SG

It’s no less than fifteen years since Jazz North East booked pianist/composer Tim Richards’
band Great Spirit., Now his tremendous new cross-generational group arrives under
the auspices of JNE’s contemporary but accessible programming stream Schmazz, featuring
both saxophonist Ed Jones and trumpeter Dick Pearce from that last appearance and another
long time associate in bassist Dominic Howles.. The band is completed by dynamic young
drummer Peter Ibbetson and rising star vibes player Ralph Wyld.

The Hextet's 2015 album 'Telegraph Hill' was acclaimed for its "buoyant, grooving melodies
and arrangements which sparkle with his players' individual, improvisatory freedom", and it's
this new material that will be at the heart of their Black Swan gig. Further information from
