Shipyard makes movies

Swan Hunter's once the most famous shipbuilder on Tyne is now being used as a film production centre.

Last year the ITV production of the police drama 'Vera' starring Brenda Blethan was made here and now the feature film 'Flutter' a UK -Canadian production is underway. On February 6th six weeks of filming this sureal movie about greyhound racing got under way.

Also on the stocks, in pre-production is 'Joe Marstons War', one of very few one-off period dramas commissioned for ITV1 in 2010, will begin filming in Newcastle early in the New Year.
Coming Soon - the 4th series of 'George Gently' Starring Martin Shaw is a television series produced by Company Pictures for BBC One. Set in the 1960s and based on the Inspector Gently novels by Alan Hunter and featuring Martin Shaw as the inspector, and Lee Ingleby as Detective Sergeant John Bacchus. It moved the setting of the stories to Northumberland and County Durham from the Norfolk portrayed in the books. In January 2010 it was announced that the BBC had secured funding from the North East Content Fund to produce further episodes of the detective drama.

All this is very good news for creative industry on Tyneside.

Northern Arts is no more,
but what role for the new North East Regional Arts Council, Over the last five years the Arts Council of England has moved to a more centralised structure and decision making about the arts in our Region is leaving Newcastle to be controlled by Manchester. The new 'Grants for the Arts' programme will cease to be administered in Newcastle with the cut down Newcastle office having only an advisory role. This centralisation of arts funding is a sad outcome for the a City that once hosted one of Britain's leading Arts Associations that had a real local input and commitment. It's strange that a change so fundamental to the life of the Arts in our region should happen so quietly and it now feels as if
a treasure has been stolen in the night.
The Gallery at the Arts Centre, refurbished in 2000, presents new exhibitions featuring both historic and contemporary work with regional connections by exceptional artists and photographers.

Our exhibition programme for 2009/2010 included -

Herman Angarita – Floating Gestures

21st November 2009 till 23rd January 2010

Art of Engineering

This incorporated Heritage Open Days events organised by the Robert Stephenson Trust with guided walks on 10th, 11th, 12th & 13th September to view Robert Stephenson’s railway structures,

New updated map of Central Newcastle

Last year we discovered that we have been wiped off the official tourist maps of Newcastle and Gateshead. A little ironic as the main map 'Walk' was designed in our studios!. Our protest resulted in a Email making it clear that Newcastle Arts Centre was officially regarded as insignificant. Much expletives later we decided to publish what is today the most up to date tourist map of Central Newcastle. Over the next few months we will expand this and integrate it with our popular Exhibitions on Tyne & Wear feature.

TV historian John Grundy has filmed a report for BBC Look North about 55 Westgate Road, a country house restoration project in the heart of the city, to be broadcast on Thursday 18th of February ( to be confirmed)

The Black Swan venue at the arts centre is available to hire and is suitable for concerts, theatre or dance performances, corporate events, either conferences or social and is a unique venue for celebrations such as birthdays or weddings.

- Regular nights include Salsa on Fridays from 7.30

The Gallery Café is a friendly central meeting point with an additional attractive courtyard seating area watched over by the‘Iron Man’ - not a formal sculpture but a giant stage puppet built for the London Young Vic's production of The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.

The café serves freshly made sandwiches, panini, salads, soups, cakes and treats.

Newcastle Arts Centre Craft Shop “Newcastle’s longest established specialist shop for original work by leading makers. More than a gift shop, it is a showcase for handmade ceramics and glass from across the UK and Europe.”

27th anniversary of our art materials shop 'details'

In 1982 we opened our first trading venture 50 yards away from the Arts Centre site of 67-75 Westgate Road, because this group of of buildings was still a derelict shambles undergoing a major restoration. Our 'New Shop' at 57 had been trading as Woolfes, a picture framer and art materials dealer since 1924 and in 1982 we took it over to acquire a presence on the street and a much needed revenue stream. Back then we began as the smallest of seven art shops in Newcastle, and many long
standing names - Mawson Swan & Morgan, North of England School Furnishing Co,Waughs, Wards and Thorns are no longer on Newcastle's high streets.
'Details' has grown steadily over the years and its revenue has made possible the galley and performance studio. Best of all was the consolidation of all departments of the Arts Centre in 2000 which was made possible by the trading cash flow.
The Arts Centre's independence and credibility in the arts community is down to 'details' and our commitment to making things possible.

A full programme of restoration is currently underway to the building that housed our first shop.
