Riverscape and the Baltic

View of Newcastle from Baltic Quay

The Baltic Connection

This photograph taken in the 1920's (prior to the building of the Tyne Bridge) shows timber being unloaded at Gateshead from the Baltic sailing ship "Sven". The Ship was originally built as a Steamer in the 1860's but like many early Steamships it was converted to Sail when its engine was due for renewal. The Baltic timber trade gave its name to the Quay and when the Mill was built in 1955 the name continued.

The shell of the Baltic Mill has been used for the new Baltic Visual Arts Centre due to open on the 9th of March 2002.

The 'Baltic' is part of a massive riverside development on the south bank of the Tyne promoted by Gateshead Council the first element being the remarkable Millennium Bridge for which Gateshead is justifiably proud.

The arrival of the new bridge November 2000 with the Baltic under construction.

Newcastle Quayside has changed dramatically in the decade since this picture was taken and although the new bridge can be raised for small vessels, tall ships can no longer dock west of the Millennium Bridge.
