An exhibition of work in progress
on a study of the River Tyne
The project builds on the
earlier studies - Cityscape (Newcastle) and Townscape
(Gateshead)
The Exhibition will feature the work of three study groups
and include public participation.
Riverscape is an initiative
of the Institutions in the Northern Region concerned with
the built environment. Encouraged by local authorities,
members of the institutions give their time freely in the
study of the townscape of an area of City or Town. The study
now under way is looking at how the Tyne serves the
conurbation and how the conurbation serves the river. Three
themes have been cross referenced, Community, Transportation
and Landscape. Case studies are being undertaken for, the
mouth of the river; the Bridgeheads which will include new
developments on Gateshead Quays and the Ouseburn; and the
West City with a look at the impact of a recreated Kings
Meadow Island which could be a base for a link between the
West of the City and the area around the Metrocentre. A
Document will be presented as a gift to the four local
authorities in the Autumn of this year.
The exhibition will explore
both the history and potential future of the Riverscape. It
will feature transport issues including an exciting proposal
for a new Tyne Ferry, running the length of the river from
the Metrocentre to the Coast, and linking both banks of the
Tyne. A new Railway Heritage Centre is proposed for the
Gateshead Garden Festival site and the potential to recreate
the lost Island of Kings Meadow is examined. In the same
area a new international rowing course is proposed to build
on the famous history of rowing on the river.
Gatesheads massive development of the Gateshead Quays
with the Baltic Visual Arts Centre and the new Regional
Music Centre, which together with its associated development
will have a major impact on the Riverscape.
The heritage of the River is
being rediscovered and ways of linking sites such as
Bedes World and Segedunum are being examined, together
with the development of routes by road, rail and river which
have always been the key to change and the cause of the ebb
and flow of the urban tideline.
As part of the Baltic's
educational programme eleven Gateshead secondary schools are
creating a model of the area around the Tyne Bridge based on
Tod Hanson's imaginative painting commissioned by Northern
Architecture.
The exhibition is part of
Architecture Week 22 June 1 July 2001.
