Frequently
Asked Questions
How do I have to prepare
the silk before painting?
Before use, the silk should be stretched over a wooden
frame or put on a piece of felt and fixed with an
adhesive. It is also wiser to wash the fabric before use
to eliminate the sizing.
What is gutta?
The gutta is a paste which passes through the silk and
stops the colour diffusion.
How can I apply the water based gutta?
Apply it directly out of the tube, ensuring that each
area has been carefully closed. The gutta outlining must
be perfectly even and continuous. To obtain better level
of waterproofing, you can iron the gutta before applying
the colours.
How do I prevent the colours from running out of the
gutta outlining?
Setasilk colours run on silk and therefore you are
advised to apply them in the middle of the outlined areas
and be careful not to overload your brush.
How do I obtain gradation of colours with
Setasilk?
Apply the different colour shades one after the other,
whithout giving them time to dry between each
application.
Once fixed, can the silk be washed or dry
cleaned?
Yes the silk can be washed although we advise waiting for
48 hours after fixing. Only the clear water based gutta
is specially formulated to be removable by washing.
How do I obtain Setasilk lighter shades?
By mixing them with the Setasilk thinner until you obtain
the desired shade. Do not use water which can alter the
resistance properties.
How do I thicken Setasilk colours to prevent them from
running out?
Mix the colours with water based Setasilk guttas (except
for the clear water based gutta) to prevent them from
running.
Can I use solvant based guttas together with Setasilk
colours?
Yes, of course. Once applied, allow the solvent based
guttas to air dry for 30 minutes, then apply Setasilk
colours. Although, we must advise that the solvant based
guttas cannot be dry cleaned!
How do I avoid rings on large washes?
Apply Setasilk with a foam brush ; rapidly fill in the
area, without leaving time for the colour to dry, in
order to avoid any traces of corrections. If you need to
dilute the colour do not use water, but the Setasilk
thinner.
Can Setasilk be used on cotton or polyester?
Yes, these fluid and luminous colours allow interesting
effects on all types of fabric.
What is the salt technique?
On humid colours, sprinkle fine or large grains of salt.
The areas, that come in contact with the grains, are
where retraction of the colour appear.
What is the sun technique?
On humid colours, put objects of your choice (leaves,
branches, plastic forms...). Lay the fabric out flat wise
in the sun or under infrared lamps. Once the fabric is
dry, remove the objects : the hidden areas will be less
intense. Then, proceed to fix
